Our special baby, incredibly sweet and loving you just have to navigate through her Jekyll and Hyde sides. Beyond her red zone tendencies, her silliness is out of this world and her love for life unsurpassed. Ripley was acquired as a puppy, originally intended to mate with Rambo once she was mature enough. With how fast she could squeak her toys, we jokingly called her the fasted squeaker in the West. As Ripley grew her aggression issues became more and more prominent, peaking to an extremely unsafe level when she went into heat, ready to lash out at anything. Beyond her behavioral issues, she was not only was failing to potty train but was marking her bed and toys. I could look into her eyes and see that she knew her behavior was wrong, but that she couldn’t control herself. The difference after she was spayed was night and day, she had her triggers still, but could control aggressive impulses better, her body shakes with the effort to restrain herself in those moments. She finally after two years of hard work was potty trained. Her long delay in learning along with her higher pitched puppy bark, helped us realize she mentally had not developed past that of a puppy. It was devastating to acknowledge after so much time, money, and effort had been spent that Ripley simply was not going to improve. Our task turned to determining the level of interaction she could have with the rest of the pack. After a great degree of hard work, Ripley is around freely with all our dogs, our latest 8 week old puppies excluded. Luckily she has a way she can function and live a happy-mostly-normal life. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners – Ripley is proof, she can happily function with respect and love without the need to be euthanized.
